The people were part of the 'Agila Indhiya Mallar Eluchi Perani', they alleged that the State government has failed to enact their request to club all seven sub-castes - Pallar, Kudumbar, Pannadi, Kaalaadi, Kadayar, Devendrakulatar and Vadhiriyaaran and bring them into one caste called 'Devendrakula Vellalars'. They also demanded that Devendrakula Vellalars be excluded from SC category and instead added in MBC category.
As the police stopped them from staging a demonstration, they submitted a petition to the District Collector.
While addressing the press, the members alleged that during the recent Parliamentary elections, the electoral candidates promised to fulfil their demand. However, none have turned back.
They also noted that while the State government have implemented policies like 10% reservation for forward communities and separation of districts, the long pending requests of Devendra Vellalar community alone have been ignored.
They warned that if their requests are not implemented, they will indulge in series of protests during local body elections. None of the people of Devendra Vellalar community will participate, they vowed.
